Shaping the mold for the press was a one of the most important steps in the whole process. It determined the both the shape and the flexibility of the board.
Cutting the pattern
The shape of the longboards was designed to follow the traditional approach of combining the forms of skateboards and surfboards. I also included areas with stronger / weaker curvatures to ensure rigidity / flexibility where needed.

It's in the details
A feature I particularly liked was the indention above the wheels. Here, the board has to be thinner to not touch the wheels when making a turn. Sanding away wood at these areas created a stunning effect of layered wood.
As I progress I also tried out different kinds of woods, like snake wood.
Same shape, different wood
More complex designs
At this design, I combined two different kinds of wood within one board. Learning the technique of wood-inlays was really satisfying.
More design variations
I showed the prototypes at the end-of-the-year show and received a lot of positive feedback and talked to interested potential customers.
